| Summary: JSONPath for Python | |
A final implementation of JSONPath for Python that aims to be standard compliant, including arithmetic and binary comparison operators and providing clear AST for metaprogramming.
Apache-2.0
* Mon Oct 26 2026 Dirk Müller <dmueller@suse.com>
- update to 1.13.0:
* Support the RFC 9535 logical operators && and || in filters.
(#27) For example, parse("$[?@.a == 1 || @.b == 2 && @.c ==
3]"). Note that filters are currently only supported in the
jsonpath_ng.ext module. && binds more tightly than ||, and
parentheses group expressions. The operators are valid only
inside a filter.
* Fix Slice.filter() taking quadratic time to remove array
elements.
* Fix Slice.filter() removing the wrong elements from an array.
* Return [] when a slice's step size is 0. For example,
parse("$[::0]").find([1,2,3]) now returns []. This aligns
with RFC 9535, section 2.3.4.2.2.
* Fix != filter comparisons with literals. This includes fixing
comparisons between string and integer values, as well as
fixing comparisons when the target path doesn't exist. For
example, parse("$[?@.a != 1]").find([{"b": 1}]) finds {"b":
1}. Previously, {"b": 1} was excluded because it didn't have
an "a" field. For example, parse("$[?@.a != 1]").find([{"a":
"x"}]) finds {"a": "x"}. Previously, {"a": "x"} was excluded.
This change aligns with RFC 9535, section 2.3.5.2.2.
* Fix a TypeError that occurs when a filter orders values of
different types. For example, parse("$[?@.a <
1]").find([{"a": None}]) now finds nothing instead of raising
a TypeError.
* Stop speculatively coercing strings to integers in filter
comparisons. For example, parse("$[?@.a == 1]").find([{"a": "
+0_1"}]) now finds nothing. Previously, the string " +0_1"
was converted to an integer before comparing and would
incorrectly match. Note that this also means that simpler
numeric strings will no longer match. For example,
parse("$[?@.a == 1]").find([{"a": "1"}]) now finds nothing.
* Serialize filters so that they can be parsed again. Note that
this in a filter selector is now replaced with @, which is
the RFC 9535 compliant syntax. Similarly, strings are single-
quoted and & is replaced with && as is required by RFC 9535.
For example, str(parse("$[?`this`.a == 1 & @.b == x]")) now
returns $[?@.a == 1 && @.b == 'x'].
* Quote field names that begin with @ when serializing a query,
unless the @ is followed by a letter or an underscore. For
example, str(jsonpath_ng.ext.parse("$['@']")) now returns
$.'@'. Previously it returned $.@, which jsonpath_ng.ext
parsed as the current node.
* The | (union) operator between paths is deprecated. A
DeprecationWarning is issued when the operator is used. It
will be removed in version 2.0.0. There is no RFC 9535
equivalent. A now-deprecated path like ($.a) | ($.b) can be
replaced with code like this: matches =
parse("$.a").find(data) + parse("$.b").find(data) Beware
that | binds tighter than .. Unparenthesized paths like a.b |
c.d are interpreted as a.(b | c).d, so write each full path
when migrating and test the paths and results for
equivalency.
* The & (intersection) operator between paths is deprecated. A
DeprecationWarning is issued when the & (intersection)
operator is used. It will be removed in version 2.0.0. There
is no RFC 9535 equivalent.
* The & (logical AND) operator in filters is deprecated. A
DeprecationWarning is issued when the & (logical AND)
operator is used. It will be removed in version 2.0.0. Its
RFC 9535 equivalent is &&. Use && instead of & in filters.
* The Union and Intersect classes are deprecated. A
DeprecationWarning is issued when they are accessed. They
will be removed in version 2.0.0.
* Update the README.
* Support a query on the right-hand side of a filter
comparison. (#79) For example: $.items[?@.a == @.b] and
$.items[?@.v == $.ref.v]. The query must start with @ or $
and may only contain name and index segments, as required by
RFC 9535.
* Resolve $ to the root node inside a filter. (#66) Previously,
$ was incorrectly treated as an alias of @. Use @ to refer to
the element being tested. This change improves RFC 9535
compliance.
* Skip index updates for non-list inputs and out-of-range array
indices.
* Fix crashes and other issues with filtering by array index.
Out-of-range indices and non-array values are now ignored,
and queries that select several indices (for example, $[0,1],
$[0,2], or $[0,-3]) now remove exactly the selected elements.
* Add type annotations for the PLY lexers and parsers.
* Add type annotations to many of the JSONPath interfaces.
* When applying an index to a string, nothing will be returned.
Previously, an index applied to a string would "find"
individual characters. For example, $[0] applied to "abc"
would find "a". This change improves RFC 9535 compliance.
* Slices and the [*] wildcard no longer coerce scalars and
objects into arrays. (#96) Previously, $[*] applied to "abc"
or 5 would find the value itself, and $[*] applied to {"a":
1} would find the whole object. This also caused $..[*] to
return phantom nodes, such as the root object and a second
copy of each string. Now, slices like [0:2] find nothing
unless they are applied to an array, and [*] finds the member
values of an object or the elements of an array and nothing
from a scalar value. This change improves RFC 9535
compliance.
* Fix RecursionError when paths using .. are applied to deeply
nested data. It is still possible to encounter
RecursionError. For example, very long JSONPath expressions
can still raise RecursionError. Note that cyclic data
structures can trigger indefinite execution, as can updating
data with a value that the path can match again. Cyclic data
structures are impossible to encounter in JSON and can only
be constructed programmatically in Python.
* Make Descendants.find() runtimes scale linearly with the
depth of the data.
* Fix TypeError when an index like [0] is applied to a scalar
value. These values now match nothing, as required by RFC
9535.
* Fix ..[*] omitting the member values of objects. (#96)
* Fix * (used as a field) omitting the elements of arrays.
(#11, #164) $.* and $..* now find array elements as well as
object member values. update() and filter() now also act on
array elements for these wildcards.
* Fix a parse error when a filter follows .., as in
$..[?@.key]. (#46) The path now parses and selects every
matching array element or object member value at any depth,
as required by RFC 9535.
* Allow filters to compare against JSON null values ([?(@.v ==
null)]). (#49) An unquoted null no longer matches the string
"null". To compare a value to the word "null", quote it
([?(@.v == 'null')]). null also continues to work as a field
name, as in $.null. != null now also matches members that are
missing, and <, <=, >, and >= no longer raise a TypeError
when compared with null.
* Allow true and false to be used as field names in the
extended parser. For example: $.true and $[?@.false ==
false]. These previously raised a JsonPathParserError.
Unquoted true and false on the right-hand side of a filter
comparison continue to be boolean literals.
* Stop treating booleans as numbers in filter comparisons.
Previously [?@.v == true] also matched 1 and [?@.v == 1] also
matched true. A boolean is now never equal to a number, which
follows RFC 9535.
* Include RFC 9535 and errata in the docs/rfc9535/ directory.
* Fix a TypeError crash that can occur when filtering scalar
values. This can only occur when a Filter has been
instantiated without expressions. (This usage is now
deprecated.)
* Deprecate instantiating Filter with no expressions. It is
impossible to encounter this deprecation via a parsed
JSONPath string. This deprecation helps align programmatic
usage with RFC 9535, which doesn't syntactically support
filters without expressions. This usage will raise an
exception in version 2.0.0.
* Fri Oct 09 2026 Martin Hauke <mardnh@gmx.de>
- Update to version 1.10.0
Changed
* Use pre-generated PLY lex/parse tables. (#121)
Base parser instantiation is now over 20 times faster,
and extended parser instantiation is over 50 times faster.
In addition, actual parsing is over 50% faster.
This change also allows downstream projects
to run with Python optimizations enabled.
Deprecated
* The `debug` parameter, given when instantiating lexers and
parsers, is now deprecated and has no effect.
* The `debug` parameter will be removed in version 2.0.0.
To prepare for the change, remove the parameter from
instantiation sites.
* The `ExtentedJsonPathParser`, which was renamed in v1.8.0,
is now deprecated.
* The `ExtentedJsonPathParser` name will be removed in version
2.0.0. To prepare for the change, use the name
`ExtendedJsonPathParser`.
* The `jsonpath_ng.__version__` attribute is now deprecated.
* The `__version__` attribute will be removed in version 2.0.0.
To prepare for the change, import `importlib.metadata` and use
`importlib.metadata.version("jsonpath-ng")` to get the package
version.
- Update to version 1.9.1
Fixed
* Add requires-python to the project metadata in pyproject.toml.
- Update to version 1.9.0
Added
* Support Python 3.15.
* Add a py.typed marker.
* Support negation of relative existence queries in extended
filter expressions (e.g. $[?(!@.field)]).
Fixed
* Ignore non-mapping values when updating named fields instead
of raising TypeError (#104).
* Return no matches for negative array indices beyond the start
of an array, matching the behavior of out-of-range positive
indices (#203).
* Fix extended filter equality against an integer literal
truncating float values, so [?(@.v = 0)] no longer matches an
element with v = 0.6 (#227).
* update() with an in-place callback returning None no longer
overwrites the field with None (#163)
* Fix an AttributeError that occurs when an Index instance is
hashed. (#224)
* Index.find no longer raises KeyError when applied to a dict
(e.g. $.*[0], where * matched a dict value).
It now matches nothing, as the docstring promises. (#93)
* Fix extended parser handling of field names that start with
true or false.
* Stop serializing Child paths with surrounding parentheses.
* Avoid mutating dictionaries while evaluating extended filter
expressions.
* str() of an Index with comma-separated indices (e.g. [0,1]) no
longer raises TypeError.
* Fix broken Slice serialization behavior.
* Previously, a slice like [0:] would serialize to [],
and a slice like [::2] would serialize to [:2].
Removed
* Drop support for Python 3.10.
* Sun Mar 15 2026 Dirk Müller <dmueller@suse.com>
